The prospect of a World Cup without Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Henry will move a step closer if Portugal and France come unstuck in the first leg of their World Cup play-offs on Saturday.Having failed to secure automatic qualification for the South Africa showpiece, Portugal must overcome Bosnia-Herzegovina while France face a stern test against Giovanni Trapattoni's rejuvenated Republic of Ireland.

Both France and Portugal, who lost to the French in the 2006 semi-finals, have been hampered by injury, with Les Bleus deprived of the services of Franck Ribery and Portugal missing talismanic captain Ronaldo.France coach Raymond Domenech, apparently immune to the welter of public criticism which has rained down on him for much of his tenure, insists the French will go through.

"I know my men are ready," said Domenech, whose side face Ireland in Dublin on Saturday prior to the return leg in Paris next Wednesday."Any pressure is internal. If the players don't feel it inside then there's something wrong and they have no place here."

Yet even as Domenech seeks to throw a protective arm around his squad he himself has been squarely in the firing line, coming in for criticism from the Irish and his own countrymen alike.Ireland defender Richard Dunne, whose side went unbeaten in qualifying only to be pipped to automatic qualification from Group Eight by reigning champions Italy, insists that with the likes of Henry and Nicolas Anelka on board, France should already be through.

"Every time a tournament comes round, France have all these world-class players and then a man who seems intent on messing them up," Dunne told The Guardian newspaper."And we know that if we can get in front, they probably have not got the man at the top to pull them back around."Domenech took time out to attend the Paris Masters tennis tournament this week and was promptly booed by fans when cameras picked him out in the crowd.

And L'Equipe sports daily picked up on criticism by depicting the Irish team lined up behind Domenech beneath the headline, 'Their luck is him!'Former Irish star Liam Brady, now an assistant to Trapattoni, says the men in green fear nobody."The pressure is on them more so than us, but we are both playing for a place in the World Cup finals, so it's enormous," he said."But if we were to carry a lead to Paris, the pressure would pile on them."French forward Sidney Govou shrugged off the mind games regarding Domenech."They (the critics) just want to put the pressure on - but it's not him who'll be out there on the pitch."For Portugal's Deco, meanwhile, the loss of Ronaldo must not be allowed to weigh too heavily on Carlos Queiroz's side.The inconsistent Greeks lost out in their group to Switzerland and have the perceived disadvantage of playing the second leg away.Guus Hiddink's Russia, who were unable to overhaul Germany in their group, host Slovenia."We should never underestimate Slovenia on any account," Hiddink warned his Euro 2008 semi-finalists.
Outside Europe, New Zealand, who appeared in the 1982 finals, take on would-be debutants Bahrain in Wellington following a goalless draw in Manama in the opening leg, while Costa Rica meet Uruguay in San Jose on Sunday.

Graeme Smith's men are clinically, methodically achieving what many thought impossible in 20-over cricket.

Saturday's 20-run victory over West Indies secured South Africa a record-breaking sixth consecutive win in the format,and maintained their unblemished record in this year's World Twenty20.

South Africa went close to achieving that aim at The Oval on Saturday, comprehensively outplaying a West Indies side that, barely 15 hours earlier, had dethroned the highly-rated Indians. The Windies' trumps, Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo, were effectively muzzled by the brilliant bowling of Wayne Parnell (4-13), who has shelved his favoured outswing for a bang-it-in approach at this tournament, and strong cameos from Dale Steyn (2-30) and Rudolph van der Merwe (2-30).

Parnell, at just 19, is the latest all-rounder to roll off South Africa's world-class production line, and could well be the most exciting prospect in international cricket at present. He could do worse than emulate the focus and consistency of Jacques Kallis who, at 33, is still considered by his international peers to be the finest all-rounder in all forms of cricket.

Kallis' 45 off 31 deliveries at the top of the South African innings set the tone for the afternoon, and provided a solid platform from which Herschelle Gibbs (55 off 35) launched. At one stage, the South Africans appeared on course for a total in excess of 200, but their eventual 183 for 7 always looked a winning score.

It might just be that we are witnessing the first team - internationally or domestically - to have mastered the Twenty20 format.

With a powerful and versatile batting line-up, wily spinners, disciplined seamers and all-rounders the envy of the cricketing world, South Africa have assembled a team capable of adapting to any surface, any condition, any opponent.End of the match the result:

Kuznetsova earned her second Grand Slam title. Jitters have often betrayed Kuznetsova down the stretch in big matches, but she swept the final four games with steady play.Instead it was the top-ranked Safina who battled her emotions in the all-Russian matchup. She double-faulted seven times, struggled with her movement and appeared near tears late in the match.Four-time French Open champion Justine Henin and others have criticised Safina's ranking because she has yet to win a major title. She climbed to No 1 in April and will remain there through at least late July, but she's now 0-3 in Grand Slam finals.

Kuznetsova ended Serena Williams' 18-match Grand Slam winning streak in the quarterfinals, and against Safina she had the more varied game, mixing the angle and pace of her groundstrokes as she scooted across the clay.She hit an occasional drop shot and won all six points when she came to the net.Cool, damp weather made for slower conditions that lessened the impact of Safina's booming groundstrokes.And her serve was woeful: Safina lost more than half her service points and was broken five times.She double-faulted for the last time on championship point, then slammed her racket to the court, and Kuznetsova's reaction to the victory was subdued.The two finalists, whose friendly rivalry dates back a decade, traded kisses on the cheek at the net.Kuznetsova then allowed herself a brief smile and acknowledged the cheering crowd by patting her chest.

West Indies skipper Chris Gayle sets his sights on another as he smashes six sixes in a dazzling exhibition of power hitting.

Andre Fletcher proves the perfect foil for Gayle as they smash the Australian attack to all corners in a first-wicket stand of 133, with Fletcher making 53 off 32 balls.

Gayle eventually falls for 88, caught off Bret Lee, whose four overs cost 56 runs, but by then victory is a formality for the Windies and they reach their target with 25 ballsto spare.

West Indies and Australia to take centre-stage at The Oval and Jerome Taylor soon has the Aussies in trouble with two wickets in the first over.

Ricky Ponting can hardly believe it as he returns to the dressing room at The Oval after falling leg-before to Taylor for a duck.

Fletcher, playing in only his third Twenty20 international, should have been dismissed when he skied Johnson high into the air but Mike Hussey failed to get a hand on the ball as he fell backwards at mid-on.

The openers might have been expected to adopt a more cautious approach after that reprieve but Gayle had other ideas and opted launched a breathtaking assault on Lee in an unforgettable fifth over. The 29-year-old left-hander hit three sixes, one of them flying out of the ground, and two fours to take his side from 44-0 to 71-0. The Oval was rocking to the beat of West Indian celebrations but the whole ground stood to applaud Gayle's 23-ball half-century, secured with a tidy single to log-off. Fletcher passed 50 off 31 balls by heaving David Hussey over wide mid-on for four but his superb knock came to an end a ball later when he miscued pull shot straight back to the bowler. Another steepling six followed before Gayle lofted a catch off Lee to Watson and Xavier Marshall chipped Johnson to James Hopes at mid-off. There was, however, no chance of an Australian fightback and Sarwan, partnered by Chanderpaul, led his side home with an edged boundary.

Jack William Nicklaus born January 21, 1940, also known as "The Golden Bear", is one of the most successful professional golfers of all time. Nicklaus holds the record for the most victories in major championships.

After winning two U.S. Amateur Championships in 1959 and 1961, and challenging for the 1960 U.S. Open, Nicklaus turned professional towards the end of 1961.

He 1962 U.S. Open was both Nicklaus's first major championship win, and his first professional win. This win over Arnold Palmer began the on-course rivalry between the two. In 1966, Nicklaus won the Masters Tournament for the second year in a row, becoming the first golfer to achieve this, and also won the Open Championship, completing his career slam of major championships. After failing to win a major for two years, Nicklaus won another Open Championship in 1970.

Between 1971 and 1980, he would win a further nine major championships, as well as overtaking Bobby Jones's record of 13 major championships. At the age of 46, Nicklaus claimed his 18th and last major championship at the 1986 Masters Tournament, becoming the oldest winner of the Masters.Nicklaus joined the Senior PGA Tour in 1990, when he became eligible, and by 1996 had won ten of the tour's tournaments, including eight of that tour's majors.

He continued to play the four PGA Tour majors until 2005, when he made his final appearances at The Open Championship and the Masters Tournament.Nicklaus has also taken part in many off-course activities, including golf course design, book writing, and running his own tournament on the PGA Tour, the Memorial Tournament. His golf course design company is one of the largest in the world.
